Johann Jakob Hess (born February 16, 1791 in Zurich ; † October 19, 1857 there ) was a Swiss lawyer and politician .

Life

After attending the Political Institute, the first political university in the city of Zurich, from 1809 to 1811, Johann Jakon Hess studied law at the University of Heidelberg from 1811 to 1813 . In 1811 he became a member of the Corps Helvetia. After completing his studies, he worked as a lawyer in Zurich . In 1818 he gained the position of secretary at the Zurich Higher Court . In 1828 he was appointed chief judge.

In 1823 Johann Jakob Hess was elected to the Zurich Grand Council . As a member of the Zurich Constitutional Council, he participated in the liberal regeneration constitution of 1831. In 1832 he was elected to the Zurich government council and became second mayor of the Zurich estate. In the years 1833 and 1839 he was President of the Federal Diet in his function as Zurich Mayor . After the Zurich coup of September 6, 1839, he was initially able to remain in office as mayor and councilor. In June 1840, however, he had to resign from his political offices.

At the beginning of his political career, Johann Jakob Hess was still part of the aristocratic camp. Towards the end of the Restoration period , he approached the Reform Party. The influence of Paul Usteri was decisive for this. Through his advocacy of the preservation of the concordat of seven , the freedom of trade and the purchase of tithes, he was one of the formative personalities of liberal progress and regeneration in the canton of Zurich. In terms of educational policy, Hess advocated the founding of the university , the teachers' college and the cantonal school and was committed to road construction.
