Johann Jakob Keller: Epitaph for the mathematician Jakob I Bernoulli , in the cloister of the Basel Minster

After an apprenticeship as a carpenter with his father Johann Heinrich Keller , Johann Jakob Keller went on a journeyman's hike that took him through Germany, Italy and France. In the mid-1680s he stayed for a long time in Versailles , where he may have worked on the sculptural decoration of the palace and the gardens. In 1688 he created carvings on an older organ in the St. Leonhard Church in Basel. In 1691 he finally settled in Basel and opened his own sculpture workshop. In 1692 he created an organ prospectus for the Peterskirche in Basel. From 1695 to 1698 he was involved as a modeller and expert for sculptural work in stone and wood in the construction of the new Zurich town hall . In 1722 he was commissioned to carve a barrel in the Basler Ratskeller (today in the Basel Historical Museum). His oeuvre also includes a number of epitaphs in Basel churches, including the one for Jakob I Bernoulli . His son Johann Heinrich II. Keller (born 1692 in Zurich, died 1756 in The Hague) was a painter.
