Johann Jakob Norbert Grund

Johann Jakob Norbert Grund (born February 2, 1755 in Gunzenhausen , † 1814 in Prague ) was a Bohemian painter, writer and musician.

Life

His father, the harpist Johann / Jan Eustach Grund (* 1726), was a brother of the Prague painter Norbert Grund (1717–1767); his grandfather Christian Grund (around 1686–1751) was court painter to the Kolowrat family in Prague.

Johann Jakob Grund wanted to join the Jesuit order, but after its abolition in 1773 he decided to become a miniature painter . No information is known about his training as a painter, it is possible that he was informed by his uncle, it is only certain that he worked as a miniature painter in Ansbach .

On July 22nd, 1779 he came to Rome and continued to paint. He married there in 1781. In Rome he had contact with Goethe , who referred to him as “Cosetto” (“Little Sächelchen”). On September 9, 1791, he was appointed professor at the Art Academy in Florence . In 1794 he left Florence and moved to Germany, later to Prague. In Prague he was mainly concerned with music and in 1814 became a professor at the Prague Conservatory .

His sons also became artists: Francesco (* 1784 in Vienna) became a painter, Enrico (* October 28, 1883 in Rome) copperplate engraver and cameo cutter, Vincenzo (* September 30, 1795 in Rome) copperplate engraver and Johann († February 18, 1847 in Rome) camee tailor.

Johann Jakob Grund wrote a tragedy, a travelogue to Italy and a work about painting by the Greeks. His work on the painting of the Greeks from 1810 is the only book on the art of the Greeks that Karl Marx verifiably read and excerpted.
