Joseph Beer (composer, 1744)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Joseph Beer , also Joseph Boer or Joseph Paer (born May 18, 1744 in Grünwald , Böhmen ; † October 28, 1812 in Berlin , according to other sources in Berlin and Potsdam in 1811) was a Bohemian clarinetist and composer.

Live and act

Beer initially worked as a horn player and trumpeter in the Imperial and Royal Army during the Seven Years' War . He then worked for about 20 years in France as a clarinetist in the Garde du corps du roi and with the Duke of Orleans. From 1784 the clarinetist worked as a chamber musician in St. Petersburg . In 1791 Beer made music with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart during a trip to Vienna . In 1792 Beer went to Prussia and worked as a royal chamber musician in Potsdam and Berlin until his death. On February 16, 1809, the 65-year-old gave a concert in Leipzig, which was well received by the audience and critics.

Beer is considered to be the creator of artistic clarinet playing. His compositional work consists of several concertos, duos and an ariette with variations.

He is often confused with the clarinetist Joseph Bähr (wrongly "Beer"; 1770–1819), with whom he is also not related. To distinguish the two clarinetists according to their main places of activity, Joseph Beer was also referred to in musicology as Berliner Beer , while Joseph Bähr was called Wallersteiner or Wiener Beer .
