Johann Joseph Imhoff (the elder)

Johann Joseph Imhoff (the elder) (born April 9, 1739 in Cologne ; † April 13, 1802 there ) was a German sculptor .

Johann Joseph Imhoff came from the important Cologne sculptors - ("picture bakers") - family Imhoff. He was the second child of the woodcarver Alexander Wilhelm Imhoff (* 1689 in Loan ( Westphalia ); † 1760 in Cologne ) and the brother of Anton Imhoff.

Johann Joseph Imhoff made late baroque wooden figures that were exhibited on the side altars of Cologne Cathedral : The statuettes of Saints Anthony and Patroclus burned on May 30, 1942 during the bombing of Cologne .

He also created the sculptures for the high altar of the St. Gregorius im Elend church in Cologne . In 1761 he created the statue of St. Peter on the south side of the west crossing in the St. Aposteln Church , as well as the altars of the Church of St. Maria in the Kupfergasse in Cologne. From 1789 to 1798 he was involved in the refurbishment of the Gross St. Martin church in Cologne, carried out under Ferdinand Franz Wallraf , in which he used the braid style extensively .

A statue of Johann-Joseph Imhoff is located as a memorial in the Protestant cemetery in Kölnstrasse in Düren .

Johann Joseph Imhoff had four sons: Franz Xaver Bernard Imhoff (* 1766; † 1824), Peter Joseph Imhoff (born July 13, 1768 in Cologne; † December 20, 1844 there), Nikolaus Imhoff and Anton Joseph Imhoff (* 1784; † 1836). Johann Joseph Imhoff ran a workshop for burned audio works with his sons.

His grandson Johann Joseph Imhoff (the younger) (* 1796, † 1860) created the tomb of his father Peter Joseph Imhof in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne in 1844 .
