Life

Johann Julius and his brother Burkhard (1731–1797), sons of Johann Matthäus Hummel from Waltershausen in Lower Franconia , were initially horn players in a military orchestra . Around 1740 they settled in The Hague in the Netherlands, where Johann Julius married Christina de Raadt in 1747 and acquired citizenship in 1751 . Here the brother established himself as a dealer, whereas Johann Julius founded a music shop in Amsterdam around 1753 , which also had sheet music, concert tickets and other items in its range. The shop was initially on the Nes, in 1764 on the Vygendam, in 1766 in the Warmoestraat and in 1780 on the Rokkin. In 1770 Johann Julius registered a music publisher with sheet music printing in Berlin and later moved entirely to the Prussian capital with a "privilege" from the Prussian king. He first handed the Amsterdam branch over to his son Johann Bernhard, in 1791 to his daughter Elisabeth Christina (1751–1818) and her husband Carl Wilhelm von Mettingh (1751–1820); it existed until 1822. He developed the Berlin business into one of the largest music publishers of its time.

The son, Johann Bernhard Hummel, born in Berlin in 1760, took over the music shop and engraving in Berlin when his father died in 1798

Johann Julius Hummel arranged symphonies by Ludwig van Beethoven for piano, flute, violin and violoncello. He published around 1000 works by German and Austrian, Bohemian, Italian and Dutch composers, including Carl Friedrich Abel , Johann Christian and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach , Luigi Boccherini , Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf , Leopold Kozeluch , Joseph Martin Kraus , Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Ignaz Pleyel , Franz Xaver Richter , Joseph Schmitt , Carl Stamitz and Johann Baptist Wanhal . He is considered the most important publisher of Joseph Haydn's works north of the Alps . Among the lesser-known published works were 2 symphonies by Johann Friedrich Berwald (* 1788), a potpourri for piano with violin or flute by Joseph Caffro (* around 1776 Naples), 1797, XII Airs for 2 violins by Johann Christian Frischmuth (1741– 1790), Giuseppe Giordani , Franz Anton Hoffmeister , an “Entreakt for Orchestra to Hamlet” by Johann David Holland (1746–1827), Adolph August von Münchhausen (approx. 1755–1811) and 6 quartets with bassoon by Franz Anton Pfeiffer (1752 -1787). He and his brother published a thematic catalog of their publications in 1768, which was followed by six supplementary editions from 1769 to 1774 and another in 1838.
