Life and work

He was the son of an instrument maker and master carpenter from Mainleus near Kulmbach . After graduating from school in Kulmbach, he became a teacher according to his parents' wishes. Since his artistic talent and inclination predominated, he moved to Munich in 1858, where he attended the polytechnic. He was accepted at the Munich Art Academy on October 24, 1860 and studied with Arthur von Ramberg , among others . After a brief engagement at the royal trade school in Neuburg an der Donau, he painted and taught in Munich from 1868 onwards . There Hetz worked from 1868 to 1893 as a professor in the subjects of drawing and modeling at the royal arts and crafts school. In 1875 he was appointed royal Bavarian professor. In his free time, he mainly devoted himself to landscape and portraiture. Every year, Hetz went on extensive study trips to southern Europe and the Alps. He drew and painted numerous genre pictures, architectural pictures and landscapes in Bavaria, Swabia, Tyrol, Italy, Dalmatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 1897 he presented a large number of watercolor vedutas from these southern countries in Bavarian exhibitions and galleries.

The genre pictures by Karl Hetz show, as drawings, watercolors and oil paintings, scenes from the life of simple people in Franconia , Bavaria and southern Europe. With his later works, Hetz often reflects a social tendency picture of his time. In particular, he depicted rural rural life in domestic scenes in small and medium-sized formats. His paintings are a valuable source of everyday rural culture and living environments between the Franconian Forest and the Adriatic Sea in the 19th century. Many of his genre pictures have been used as illustrations in newspapers and magazines. a. in the gazebo use.

Carl Hetz's works, especially his genre paintings, landscapes and architectural pieces, found buyers in the USA during his lifetime and are now being traded at numerous auctions there and in Europe. In addition to galleries, various art associations in Bavarian cities also promoted Hetz's works during his lifetime. In 1886, Hetz submitted the painting "The Lord Bridegroom" to the Swiss Art Exhibition in Aarau from May 9th to 30th, 1886, which was offered on site for 1200 francs.
