Johann Liborius Zimmermann

Johann Liborius Zimmermann (born November 14, 1702 in Wernigerode , † April 2, 1734 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German Protestant theologian . From 1731 he was professor of theology at the University of Halle .

Life

Johann Liborius Zimmermann was born the son of a white baker. He first attended the Latin school in Wernigerode and later the cathedral school in Halberstadt . From 1721 he studied philology , philosophy and theology at the University of Jena under Johann Georg Walch and Johann Franz Buddeus, among others . Buddeus convinced him to embark on an academic career. In 1725 Zimmermann acquired his master's degree and began to give theological lectures at Jena University himself. During this time he also began to work on his extensive literature .

In 1728 Zimmermann became court preacher to Christian Ernst Graf von Stolberg-Wernigerode and consistorial councilor in his native city of Wernigerode. In 1731 he accepted the call to the theological faculty of the University of Halle while retaining his obligation as consistorial councilor in his hometown. In Halle, along with August Hermann Francke and Joachim Lange , he was one of the pietistic university theologians . Johann Liborius Zimmermann died on April 2, 1734, at the age of 31, in Halle. He was buried in Halle's Stadtgottesacker . His grave is in crypt arch 16, grave inscriptions are no longer preserved, but his death mask still exists.
