Johann Marcus David

Johann Marcus David (born January 13, 1764 in Hamburg , † March 1, 1815 in Oldenburg ) was a German history , landscape and portrait painter .

Life

David came from a poor background and was an orphan at an early age . After his parents' death, he was sent to an orphanage, where his tutors noticed his artistic talent. With the support of the Hamburg Society for the Advancement of the Arts and Useful Trades , he received artistic training from the drawing teacher Th. Reincke.

His subsequent study trips took Johann Marcus David first to Copenhagen , then in 1791 to Dresden , Leipzig and Italy . In 1792 he accepted a position as a drawing teacher at the Princely Institute in Dessau , which he held for several years before he returned to his hometown. In the next few decades he worked mainly in Hamburg and Lübeck , producing portraits and cityscapes in copperplate engraving , etchings and watercolors .

On March 1, 1815, David died in a broken marital relationship and in poverty.
