Johann Martin Müller (born June 22, 1722 in Wernigerode , † December 9, 1781 in Hamburg ) was a German educator .

Life

Johann Martin Müller attended the secondary school in Wernigerode under the rector Eustasius Friedrich Schütze . When he was called to Altona in 1738 , Müller followed him and stayed there for four or five years. His sovereign Christian Ernst zu Stolberg-Wernigerode then sent Müller to Halle to study theology. Towards the end of his studies he gave lessons at the Francke Foundations and discovered his interest in education. In 1745 he therefore accepted a position as private tutor in Hamburg. Four years later he was appointed head of the Latin school in Altenbruch . From 1750 to 1754 Müller had the rectorate of the school in Otterndorf . He then became vice-principal of the Hamburg Johanneum . From 1773 he was the principal of this school.

Johann Martin Müller came up against the ideas of the pedagogue Johann Bernhard Basedow in some of his theoretical writings . His work on the history of schools and scholars is still of value today.
