Johann Mentzer
Johann Mentzer (* July 27, 1658 in Jahmen in der Oberlausitz , † February 24, 1734 in Kemnitz near Bernstadt ) was a German Lutheran theologian and hymn poet.
Life
Mentzer attended grammar school in Bautzen and studied theology at the University of Wittenberg . He received his first position in Merzdorf in 1691 , two years later (1693) he was called to Hauswalde and finally in 1696 to pastor in Kemnitz , where he remained until his death.
Mentzer belonged to a group of poets that was shaped by the rise of pietism , and who in the 19th century was considered to belong to the second Silesian school . About 40 of his numerous hymn poems have been published. In Freylinghausen's hymn book , his most famous song, O that I had a thousand tongues, appeared in 1704 , which can still be found in the Evangelical hymn book (EG 330).
