history

Map of Oberreit with Bernstadt on the property around 1845

Bernstadt auf dem Eigen was first mentioned on September 22nd, 1234 in a document from the Bishop of Meißen as "Bernhardistorf". The country town belonged for centuries to the rule of the abbesses of the St. Marienstern monastery . Against the will of their rule, the Bern city dwellers led in the mid-16th century, the Reformation , which has led to decades of conflict with the abbess.

Place name forms

1234: Bernhardistorf, 1245: Bernardistorf, 1280: Bernhartstorf, 1285: Bernhardus et Otto fratres dicti de Bernhartsdorf, 1290: Bernhardsdorph, 1339: civitas Bernardi, 1352: Bernhartsdorff, 1384: Bernersdorf, 1401: Bernstorph, 1425: Bernsdurff, 1497: Bernstat , 1516: Bernstadt, 1566: Bernstettel.

Filip Rězak gave the Sorbian name in 1920 with Bjenadźicy and Bjarnaćicy , Walter Wenzel gave it again in 2008 as Bjernadźicy but also as Bjenadźicy , but also mentioned Benadźice as a name form from 1719. Since the city lies outside the Sorbian settlement area, there is no officially binding form .

coat of arms

The story of the coat of arms of the Upper Lusatian town of Bernstadt is a bit strange. Bernstadt has a solid wall and a tower on a blue field, which underline the city's status - but Bernstadt never had a closed wall, only three city gates "protected" the city. However, these fell victim to the great city fire of 1828.

In 1900, the coat of arms that is valid today was confirmed, but it is based very closely on a form that has existed since 1538. In the meantime there was a coat of arms with a horizontally crenellated wall. An award date is not known. But it can be assumed with certainty that the coat of arms was bestowed by the then owner of Bernstadt, the Marienstern monastery near Kamenz.

Partnerships

Bernstadt maintains partnerships with two municipalities that also bear the name Bernstadt. These have been Bernstadt in Baden-Württemberg since June 1, 1991 and the city of Bierutów (German: Bernstadt an der Weide) in Poland since May 10, 1997 .

Since October 2005 there have been further relationships with the municipality of Zawidów (German: Seidenberg) in Poland, this concerns the cross-border cooperation of the volunteer fire brigade and the schools.
