Johann Nepomuk Reithoffer (born April 13, 1781 in Feldsberg , Lower Austria; † May 6, 1872 in Vienna ) was an Austrian entrepreneur and founder of the Lower Austrian kk state-authorized rubber elastic and gutta-percha factory in Wimpassing , which, after merging with other companies in 1912, became the Semperit company originated.

Life

Johann Reihoffer first learned the tailoring trade from his father. On his wanderings, during which he came to Paris, he attended chemistry lectures at the Sorbonne . After his return he settled in Nikolsburg . With the help of his wife's dowry, he started his own tailor shop in 1807. His main focus was the production of waterproof fabrics, for which he was granted a privilege in 1824. Since he was boycotted by the other tailors, he moved to Roßau near Vienna.

In 1828 Reithoffer received the patent for the machine weaving of rubber threads, which was followed in 1831 by the privilege of sole production. This can be described as the birth of the rubber industry. In Wimpassing in Lower Austria, he bought a cheap piece of land where he began to produce rubber elasticum and gutta-percha . As early as 1843 he employed 140 workers and 70 masters. At the industrial exhibition in 1845, his products were awarded a gold medal.

The business was expanded further and in 1853 he handed over the management to his sons Eduard, Ludwig, Rudolf and Moritz.

Reithoffer died in 1872. The predecessor company of Semperit AG already employed 800 people this year.

In 1895, the Reithofferplatz in Vienna Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus (15th district) was named after him.
