Johann Peter van Ghelen
Johann Peter van Ghelen (* 1673 in Vienna ; † September 19, 1754 there ) was an Austrian printer .
Life
Johann Peter van Ghelen was the son of the Antwerp-born Viennese book printer Johann van Ghelen . He learned printing from his father and the book trade in Brussels in 1692 . After traveling through Germany, France and Italy, he returned home and gradually took over his father's business.
Ghelen acquired imperial privileges which entitle him to the exclusive printing and publishing of calendars, gospels and prayer books. With this privilege he was able to take over the rights to the Wiennerisches Diarium in 1722 , the oldest daily newspaper in the world to this day. As a result, he established a press monopoly in Vienna, which lasted for over half a century. With the “Wienner Diarium” he achieved the character of a state newspaper .
After his death, Johann Leopold van Ghelen continued the company. In 1894 the Ghelengasse in Vienna- Hietzing was named after him and his father.
