Johann Pfotel (born November 21, 1445 in Roth ; † December 3, 1511 in Ansbach ) was a German legal scholar and diplomat .

Life

education

Johann Pfotel was born on November 21, 1445 as the son of Fritz Pfotel and his wife Elisabeth in Roth. Presumably the talented boy went to school in the nearby monastery school in Heilsbronn or in the monastery school in St. Gumbert in Ansbach . In 1460, when he was 15, he was enrolled at the University of Leipzig . In 1461, just 16 years old, he obtained his first academic degree there, the "Baccalaureat". It is not known at which university he the study of jurisprudence recorded and with the acquisition of Doktorhutes completed.

Career

In 1461, on February 23rd, his father died in Roth; his mother died a few years later on September 21, 1466. During this time between 1466 and 1467 Johann Pfotel can be proven as a "Baccalaureus" in Roth. In 1472 he called himself "in keyerlichen right doctor". In 1474 he appears in the Ehaft books of the city of Roth as "venerable Johann Pfottel, doctor". In the same year, the 29-year-old doctor was sent by Margrave Albrecht Achilles on a diplomatic mission to Bohemia and Poland .

In February 1475 he was sent for the Abbot of Wülzburg to Eichstatt and in the monastery Wülzburg . A little later he worked for a captured canon . In 1476 we find him as a witness in Cölln on the Spree , and in the same year he stayed twice in Prague as the authorized envoy Albrecht Achilles . Until 1478 he was on the Vltava three times . Pfotel was sent as envoy to numerous European courts. It was a matter of clearing up political disputes, conducting trials, delivering messages from his master, soliciting customers or appearing as witnesses. In 1486 Dr. Pfotel ordered to the Kaiser in Speyer . Friedrich III. had conversations with him several times. Pfotel also paid his respects there to the Roman King Maximilian I. The margravial councilor Dr. Pfotel sent to the emperor on imperial matters. Despite countless obligations, the busy man has been proven to have been to his native Roth several times. For example 1473, 1475, 1496, 1499 and 1508. He proved his attachment to his hometown by setting up the Thursday procession at the town church in Roth on March 12, 1489.

Pfotel was married to Elisabeth, who was born in Heilsbronn . The marriage remained childless. His wife died on October 8, 1483. In 1484 he possibly married a second time. Dr. Johann Pfotel died without leaving any family members on December 3, 1511 at the age of 66 in Ansbach. He was buried in the St. Sebastian Chapel of the Collegiate Church of St. Gumbert. He left a handsome fortune.

Afterlife

According to medieval beliefs, a person's salvation can be achieved through pious foundations and anniversary celebrations. From Dr. Johann Pfotel has received a large number of foundations. The wealthy Dr. Pfotel in his last will not. His executors bought "Zins und Gülten" in 1511 for an unknown sum from the Schwabach castler Hans Linck, which they handed over to the Rother church caretakers Hans Veyrell, Hans Protzel and Linhard Truhendinger to improve the alms at the Marienkirche.
