Johann Rudolph Osiander (born May 21, 1689 in Tübingen ; † October 20, 1725 there ) was a German philologist and Protestant theologian.

Life

The son of Johann Osiander studied at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen and acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in 1708 . Then he turned to the study of theology, where he mainly dealt with the Hebrew language, as well as the questions of ethics and in 1711 was repetent at the monastery in Tübingen . After an educational trip through some German cities, he became the tutor of Prince Friedrich Ludwig in 1713, with whom he traveled to Holland and continued his studies with famous teachers at the universities of Utrecht , Leiden , Rotterdam , Amsterdam and The Hague .

When he returned home, he became an associate professor of philosophy and oriental languages in 1715, and a full professor of the Greek language in 1716 and a visitor to the schools ob der Staig . He received his doctorate in theology on September 2, 1720 , was a full professor of theology in 1720, as well as Ephorus of the princely theological scholarships and morning preacher at St. George's Church . Osiander stood out as an opponent of Christian Wolff . He participates in the organizational tasks of the Tübingen University and was once dean of the philosophical faculty, several times dean of the theological faculty and twice rector of the alma mater.
