Johann (Baptist) Schroffner (born May 10, 1891 in Thalgau (Austria); † April 14, 1940 in Buchenwald concentration camp ) was an Austrian priest , supporter of a Catholic corporate state and resistance fighter against the Nazi state .

Life

Johann Schroffner graduated from the seminary in Salzburg after completing his high school diploma . He was ordained a priest in 1915. Afterwards he was employed as a cooperator in some Salzburg and Tyrolean parishes. After disagreements with his superiors, he was transferred to the town of Oberndorf near Kitzbühel as a pastor in 1936 . He was a member of the “ Fatherland Front ” and an ardent supporter of the Catholic corporate state under Dollfuss . As a result, he let himself be carried away to disrespectful remarks about German politicians after the annexation of Austria . Thereupon he was arrested by the Gestapo on August 2, 1939 and imprisoned for a week in the Innsbruck police prison. From there he was transferred to the Dachau concentration camp , where he came to the notorious punishment company . From Dachau he was later sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp . Here he was brought to the bunker, where he was personally cruelly abused by SS-Hauptscharführer Martin Sommer . From his injuries and a gasoline - injection he suffered an agonizing death.

  • In 2009 a memorial plaque for four victims of the Nazi dictatorship was unveiled in Salzburg, which also contains his name.
  • His urn was buried in his birthplace Thalgau . He is commemorated on a memorial stone at the National Socialist Victims Memorial there.
