Johann Werner Mödlhammer

Johann Werner Mödlhammer (born July 16, 1932 in Oberndorf near Salzburg ; † November 7, 2017 there ) was an Austrian Catholic theologian . He was a professor for fundamental theology and ecumenism in Salzburg with a focus on Reformation theology .

Life

Werner Mödlhammer studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Paris-Lodron University in Salzburg and in Paris at the Institut catholique de Paris . In 1957 he was ordained a priest in Salzburg Cathedral . He was a cooperator in Mayrhofen and Straßwalchen, then as vicar in Hallein.

After studying Charles de Foucauld and Islam in Morocco in 1965/66, he was a research assistant at the Institute for Dogmatics at the Theological Faculty of the University of Salzburg from 1966 to 1973. In 1969 he became involved with the work “Church and World at Paul Tillich. Post-conciliar studies on the theological approach "to Dr. theol. PhD. In 1973/74 he was an assistant at the Institute for Ecumenical Theology at the University of Salzburg. In 1976 he qualified as a professor in ecumenical theology with a special focus on Protestant theology with the study “Adoration and freedom. Theological-anthropological reflections on Dietrich Bonhoeffer's theology ”. Shortly thereafter, Mödlhammer took over the management of the newly established department for Reformation Theology. In 1977 he became a lecturer at the University of Vienna . During his habilitation studies, he was a spiritual director in the seminary in Salzburg for a few years . In 1992 he was offered the chair for fundamental theology and ecumenism in Salzburg. On September 30, 2000, he retired from the Theological Faculty of the University of Salzburg.

Christian ecumenism was of particular concern to him, and he chaired ecumenical commissions and working groups in the Archdiocese of Salzburg and in the universal church sector. He was also a member of the Priestly Council, the Ecumenical Commission, the Mixed Catholic-Protestant Commission, the Ecumenical Council of Churches in Austria and the Ecumenical Commission of the Austrian Bishops' Conference.
