Johann Wilhelm Hoffmann (born November 19, 1710 in Zittau , † November 12, 1739 in Wittenberg ) was a German historian, legal scholar and publicist.

Life

Johann Wilhelm Hoffmann was born in Zittau in 1710 as the son of the school principal Gottfried Hoffmann († October 1, 1712). After the early death of his father, his mother (née Schönfelder) and later his brother Christian Gottfried Hoffmann took over his upbringing. After he had completed his school education in 1728, he moved to the University of Frankfurt (Oder) on November 13, 1728 , in order to initially devote himself to studying law.

He quickly acquired degrees. In 1731 he received his master's degree and completed his habilitation on December 8, 1731 at the philosophical faculty. After obtaining his doctorate in law on November 15, 1732 , he went to Greifswald University as a professor in the law faculty in 1734 . In line with his inclinations, he accepted an appointment at the University of Wittenberg as a professor of history in 1737 .

Together with his brother's famous library, he arrived in Wittenberg in May 1737. There he gave lectures on Roman literature as well as on church and legal history. He turned down offers from the University of Göttingen , the University of Uppsala and the University of Frankfurt (Oder). In 1739 he was given a professorship at the Wittenberg law faculty and was appointed royal court and judicial councilor by the Saxon elector Augustus the Strong . But he didn’t have any more of this title, as he died at the young age of 30 as a result of constant overexertion.
