Johann Wilhelm Holle

Johann Wilhelm Holle (born December 3, 1802 in Bayreuth ; † September 16, 1862 ) was a German teacher, local researcher for Upper Franconian history and founding editor of the Archive for History and Antiquity of Upper Franconia , the annual journal of the Historical Association for Upper Franconia .

Life

Johann Wilhelm Holle grew up in Bayreuth. His father Johann Friedrich Holle came from Northern Germany and was a royal Bavarian customs officer, his mother a née Och from Hutschdorf . Johann Wilhelm Holle was married to a pastor's daughter, née Haberstrumpf. The marriage resulted in four sons and four daughters.

He attended the Christian-Ernestinum high school , later he studied philosophical sciences with a focus on philology and history in Munich . In 1823 he was employed as a teaching assistant at the Bayreuth grammar school, where he was promoted to study teacher in 1825 and taught until 1858. Due to illness, he was retired that year and since then has devoted himself even more intensively to the medieval history of Upper Franconia. This includes numerous publications, including a chronicle on the history of Bayreuth in 1833 . In the renowned annual journal of the Historical Association for Upper Franconia , he developed a lively activity of publishing specialist articles and was entrusted with the editing. For the royal college in Bayreuth (see University of Bayreuth # History ) he administered foundation funds that were used for scholarships.

The focus of his work was a. the city history of Bayreuth. He dealt with the history of former noble families in what is now Upper Franconia, as well as the later noble families and various Kulmbacher, Bayreuth and Ansbach margraves.
