Johann von Brandenburg-Ansbach (born January 9, 1493 on the Plassenburg ; † July 5, 1525 in Valencia ) was the Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach as well as captain general and viceroy of Valencia .

Life

Johann was the fifth son of Margrave Friedrich the Elder of Brandenburg-Ansbach and Bayreuth (1460-1536) from his marriage to Sophia of Poland (1464-1512), daughter of King Casimir IV of Poland . He was thus the cousin of Elector Joachim von Brandenburg .

At the age of 16 he took part in the Battle of Agnadello and then accompanied King Ferdinand the Catholic to Spain, where he grew up with the later Emperor Charles V , with whom he developed a close friendly relationship. Johann took part in Charles' coronation as emperor and was involved in government affairs. In 1516 he became a Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece .

On June 17, 1519, he married his step-grandmother Germaine de Foix , daughter of Count John of Étampes and widow of King Ferdinand II of Aragon, in Barcelona on the mediation of Emperor Charles . Germaine held the office of captain general and viceroy of Valencia , which Karl extended to Johann on March 27, 1523. The couple took the solemn oath of office on December 11, 1523 in the Cathedral of Valencia. During the revolutionary unrest in Valencia, almost all the palaces of the nobles living there were destroyed, but Johann's palace was spared. When Emperor Karl was arming against France in 1524, Johann moved his and his wife's jewels as well as gold and silver crockery to help Karl out with funds.

After the Battle of Pavia in 1525, Johann was entrusted with the supervision of the captured King Francis I of France , who arrived in Valencia at the end of June 1525. At that time Johann was suddenly and seriously ill, rumor has it that his wife poisoned him, whom he intended to send to Germany under strict supervision. King Franz made his personal physician available to him, but the margrave died on July 5th in Valencia. According to his wishes, Johann was buried in the convent Jerusalem near Valencia. After the death of John, Germaine married Ferdinand of Aragon, Duke of Calabria and Prince of Taranto, on August 1, 1526 in Seville , who was born on December 15, 1488 in Andria to King Frederick I of Naples and Isabella del Balzo.
