Johann Freiherr von Türckheim zu Altdorf (born November 10, 1749 in Strasbourg ; † January 28, 1824 ) was a German diplomat and genealogist.

Origin and family

Johann von Türckheim was the eldest son of the father of the same name, Johann von Türckheim (1707–1793), who was made baron by Emperor Joseph II in 1782 in recognition of his services to the German Empire. The mother was Maria Magdalene nee Henneberg (1720–1793), the daughter of the merchant and merchant in Strasbourg, banker and archivist of the city of Strasbourg, Johann Bernhard Henneberg and Margarete Salome nee Bischoff. One of his brothers was Bernhard Friedrich von Türckheim (1752–1831).

Johann von Türckheim was married to Klara Dorothea von Seufferheld (1759–1829) and had eight children with her. a. the later civil servant and politician Johann von Türckheim (1778–1847), another the Hesse-Darmstadt diplomat Ferdinand August Josef Freiherr von Türckheim (1789–1848).

Life

Johann Türckheim attended grammar school in Strasbourg, studied law, received his doctorate and then went on an educational journey through France, Switzerland and southern Germany. From 1774 he took over public offices in the administration of Strasbourg. 1787 was Türckheim by Louis XVI. Appointed to the provincial estates of Alsace . When the revolution broke out , Türckheim was elected by the citizens of Strasbourg as a representative of the third estate in the national assembly and advocated the retention of the German constitution for the city of Strasbourg. After the events of 5./6. In October 1789 he resigned his mandate and a little later went to Germany forever.

As early as 1783, Türckheim had also become the Secret Council of Nassau-Usingen . In 1796 he was appointed envoy of the Saxon courts and of Hessen-Kassel to the Franconian district . He entered the service of the Hessian Landgrave Ludwig X. , in 1803 became his envoy to the Reichstag in Regensburg , in 1814 was his representative at the Allied headquarters and took part in the Congress of Vienna .

At the age of 70, Türckheim withdrew from politics and lived on his Altdorf estate .
