Johanna Schell (born November 18, 1927 in Erfurt ; † February 12, 2017 in Potsdam ) was a German church music teacher and organist at the Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Potsdam.

Live and act

Johanna Schell received her first organ lessons from the then Erfurt cathedral organist Heinrich Stockhorst, whom she also frequently represented at church services in the post-war years. After graduating from high school, she began studying church music in 1947 at the University of Music in Berlin-Charlottenburg (with Joseph Ahrens ), which she completed in 1951 with the state examination. As early as 1950 she accepted the position as organist and choir director at the Catholic parish of St. Peter and Paul in Potsdam and stayed here for 37 years. To do this, she moved her residence from West Berlin to Potsdam. In 1954 she began studying musicology and philosophy at the Free University of Berlin, where she received her doctorate in July 1961. phil.

After the building of the Wall in August 1961, the church music training for choir directors and organists had to be reorganized for the eastern part of the Catholic diocese of Berlin . Johanna Schell took over and taught alone, later with other teachers from 1961 to 1998 a total of around 150 students. In addition, she had been an organ expert for the area already mentioned since 1959 . To this end, she advised parishes on new organs or major repairs (preparation of dispositions; review of expert reports and cost estimates; organ acceptance). Another concern for her was the organization of advanced training conferences for Catholic church musicians from the GDR with the involvement of West German colleagues.

After reaching legal retirement, Johanna Schell was entrusted with national tasks for a further eleven years until 1998. After that she remained organist, but had to reduce her workload due to health reasons and played mainly on the organ of the St. Josefs Chapel in Potsdam.

Her grave is in the New Cemetery in Potsdam .
