Johannes Amsinck (businessman)
Johannes Amsinck (born March 23, 1792 in Hamburg ; † September 8, 1879 there ) was a German businessman, entrepreneur and patron .
Life
Amsinck was the eldest son of Hamburg's mayor Wilhelm Amsinck (1752–1831) and came from a Hanseatic family that had lived in the city since the 16th century . In 1815 he first became a partner and in 1837 sole owner of the company Johannes Schuback & Sons , founded by his maternal grandfather , which specialized primarily in trade with South America . For this reason, Amsinck was instrumental in founding the shipping companies HAPAG and Hamburg Süd .
As was customary at the time, Amsinck held several honorary positions. After the Hamburg fire in 1842, he was a member of the deputation for the reconstruction of the city, in 1848 he became a member of the deputation for the drafting of a new constitution - both under the direction of his younger brother Wilhelm (1793–1874). In 1836/37 and 1840/41 he took over the administration of the Dutch Poor's Casse , which had been founded by his ancestor Willem Amsinck , who immigrated from Holland .
Johannes Amsinck owned an important collection of paintings by Dutch artists, which he bequeathed to the Hamburger Kunsthalle . He also left a beetle collection to the Natural History Museum in his hometown, which was destroyed in World War II .
progeny
With his wife Emilie geb. Goßler , daughter of the banker Johann Heinrich Gossler , Amsinck had 12 children. His sons Wilhelm and Heinrich later took over their father's company, while Erdwin and Gustav founded their own company ( LE Amsinck & Co. ) in New York . Martin Garlieb Amsinck became a shipbuilder and shipowner, another son became a doctor, while the daughters married into respected families (e.g. Lattmann , Merck , Sieveking ).
