Johannes Bastgen

Johannes Bastgen (born November 6, 1947 in Neuerburg ; † March 11, 2012 in Blerichen ) was a Roman Catholic priest and Cologne cathedral dean .

Bastgen grew up in Bedburg and passed the Abitur examination at a grammar school in Bergheim . After studying theology in Bonn, Trier and Cologne, he was ordained a priest on June 14, 1972 with 17 other candidates in Cologne Cathedral by Archbishop Joseph Cardinal Höffner . Then he was chaplain at St. Gereon in Monheim . In 1977 he was transferred to St. Paulus in Düsseldorf , where the later cathedral provost Bernard Henrichs was pastor and city dean.

Since 1980 he has been city youth pastor in Düsseldorf and in 1983 pastor of the Herz Jesu congregation in Euskirchen . After becoming dean of the Euskirchen dean's office in 1989 , he also became the district dean of the Euskirchen district dean's office in 1991 . Raised monsignor in 1993 , Johannes Bastgen took over the management of the Pastoral Services Department in the General Vicariate of Cologne and became Head of the Pastoral Staff Department in 1996, and was therefore head of personnel for all pastoral services in the Archdiocese of Cologne (priests, deacons, pastoral and parish officers). In 1996 he was made an honorary papal prelate.

From 2002 to 2003 Johannes Bastgen was deputy vicar general in the Archdiocese of Cologne. In 2003 Cardinal Joachim Meisner appointed him cathedral dean and priest at Cologne Cathedral and city dean in Cologne. From 2004 he was chairman of the Caritas Council in the Caritas Association for the city of Cologne.

Prelate Johannes Bastgen died after a long illness on March 11, 2012 and was buried on March 20, 2012 after a pontifical request celebrated by Cardinal Meisner and the Cologne Cathedral Chapter on March 20, 2012 in the Cologne Cathedral Cemetery.
