Life

Born as the son of councilor Statius Borcholten (the elder) and his wife Hille von der Mühlen, who came from a noble family of salt squires, he first attended school in his hometown. At the age of 21 he enrolled at the University of Wittenberg , where he attended the lectures of Matthias Wesenbeck and Philipp Melanchthon . After two years he traveled to France , where he stayed for ten years, spending five years with Jacques Cujas (Jacob Cujacius) in Bourges. From there he was appointed professor at the University of Rostock and syndic of the city.

Prior to being reached in Rostock, he received his doctorate at the University of Basel for Doctor of Law . He then stayed in Rostock for nine years.

When the University of Helmstedt was founded, Duke Julius von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel appointed him to the local university in 1576, where he was the first full professor of the law faculty for 17 years. His writings, some of which were published by his son Statius Borcholt (d. J.), testify to an extensive knowledge in his field of law, which also gave him recognition abroad.

With an annual salary, he remained a lifelong advisor to the city of Rostock and, for example, worked on the inheritance contract of Duke Ulrich von Mecklenburg in Güstrow in 1584. As prorector, he exercised the rights of the Hofpfalzgrafenamt in 1577 and 1585/86, which was conferred on the university as an institution. Martin Lipenius has a wealth of publications, including a shipping report for the city of Magdeburg.

Borcholt fell ill in later years. He lost his hearing and eventually passed away at the age of 58. He was buried on October 11, 1593 in St. Stephen's Church in Helmstedt.

family

His brothers were the chancellor of Verden Heinrich Borcholt (1531-1585), the mayor of Lüneburg Georg Borcholt († 1600) and the archiepiscopal Bremen, episcopal Hildesheim and princely Lüneburg councilor Caspar Borcholt († 1599).

The Chancellor of Wolfenbüttel Franciscus Musseltin and a councilor from Lüneburg were his uncles on his mother's side. In 1568 Johannes married the daughter of the mayor of Lüneburg Franz von Dassel , who survived him. The marriage had nine children, of whom two sons and three daughters outlived their father. The aforementioned Statius Borcholt (d. J.) and the daughter Agneta Borcholt are known.
