Johannes Cornelis van Essen
Johannes Cornelis van Essen (born January 25, 1854 in Amsterdam , † May 23, 1936 in Scherpenzeel ) was a Dutch animal painter , graphic artist and illustrator, as well as etcher and lithographer .
Van Essen was a student of Petrus Franciscus Greive (1811–1872) and Hendrik Valkenburg (1826–1896). In his early days he mainly painted portraits and landscapes. Under the influence of the English animal painter and sculptor John Macallan Swan (1846-1910), he devoted himself to animal painting around 1885, often visiting the Amsterdam Artis Zoo , where he especially painted lions and large birds.
He lived and worked in Amsterdam, from 1879 in Arnhem, from 1892 to 1898 in Scherpenzeel, from 1899 to 1913 in The Hague , and then again in Scherpenzeel.
He was a member of " Arti et Amicitiae " in Amsterdam. Johan Bernard de Hoog (1866–1943) was his student.
His works can be found in the Teylers Museum in Haarlem , the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam .
