Hendrik Valkenburg

Hendrik Valkenburg (born September 8, 1826 in the village of Terwolde (now the municipality of Voorst ), † October 29, 1896 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch genre painter and art teacher.

Valkenburg began his apprenticeship in the drawing school in Deventer with Jacob Jansen Vredenburg until 1844 and continued his studies from 1848 to 1853 at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Antwerpen .

He then worked as a drawing teacher from 1854 to 1865 in Almelo , then in Helmond and from 1868 to 1872 in Zwolle .

While still in Zwolle in 1871, he received a royal scholarship, but only after moving to Amsterdam in 1872 was he able to devote himself entirely to painting. He became a member of " Arti et Amicitiae ".

He mostly painted genre pictures and interiors relating to the life of the farmers in Twente and Gooise Meren , as well as depictions of the fishermen in Zandvoort . He also created some landscape paintings.

He was an employee of Gerard Jacobus Scheurleer (1801–1871). He taught privately in Amsterdam, a. a. Jan Herman Coster (1846–1920), Hendrik Johannes Havermann (1857–1928) and Johannes Cornelis van Essen .

Valkenburg took part in numerous exhibitions: 1852 in Kampen , 1854 in 's-Hertogenbosch , 1855 in Zwolle, 1859 in Leeuwarden and from 1859 to 1896 in Amsterdam and The Hague .
