Johannes Czwalina (born May 25, 1952 in Berlin ) is a theologian , author and management consultant .

Life

Johannes Czwalina was born as the son of the veterinarian Ingo Czwalina in Berlin. His grandfather is the math historian and translator of ancient Greek mathematics Arthur Czwalina . After graduating from high school in ancient languages (Greek, Hebrew, Latin) in 1973, he studied archeology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem from 1973 to 1974. From 1974 to 1976 he studied at the state-independent theological college in Basel . Furthermore, studied at the University of Basel from 1976 to 1980 theology and received his diploma as a qualified theologian on April 1, 1980. The ordination by the Evangelical Reformed Church Basel-Stadt was made on 13 June 1983rd

In 1977, together with Robi Roth, he founded Alban-Arbeit, a city church under the umbrella of the Evangelical Reformed Church. During the 1970s and 1980s, the Alban work saw a large influx of young people in particular. Alban-Arbeit founded various social works, such as the youth center E9 or the Weizenkorn workshop with protected jobs and training positions.

In 1990, Johannes Czwalina began advising executives from business and politics and in 1993 went into business for himself with CC Czwalina Consulting AG. At the same time, the Society for Advising Executives (GBF) was created, which accompanies people who can no longer pay for advice due to emergency situations. He works as an author, speaker and conversation partner at congresses, radio and television broadcasts.

In the summer of 2010, Czwalina received around 100 hate mail and several death threats because he advertised himself to pay Muslim families the busses of the Basel government because they had refused to send their daughters to swimming lessons out of their shame. Czwalina paid the fines and initiated a lawsuit at the European Court of Human Rights , which, however, ruled in 2017 that the students had to attend mixed-sex swimming lessons.

At the beginning of 2011, together with Rudolf Geigy from the Esther Foundation, he opened the Riehen memorial in a former switchman house of the Reichsbahn , which commemorates the fate of the mostly Jewish refugees on the Swiss border, their helpers and the rejection by Swiss authorities during the Nazi regime. Rule in the German Empire remembered. A collaboration with the Institute for Jewish Studies at the University of Basel (IJS) sought by Czwalina was rejected by its director Erik Petry because he expected a more distant, scientific approach to the topic , while Czwalina pursued a more emotional path and the aim of a memorial another than that of a museum . Since the city of Basel was planning its own museum for the history of refugees, there was no collaboration with the Jewish Museum of Switzerland . The planned museum has not yet been realized (as of 2017).

Since 2013 there have been regular discussions on topics of cooperation with the Center for Jewish Studies in Basel. In 2015, the Israeli ambassador gave a lecture on the current situation in Israel on the occasion of the memorial's four-year existence. The cooperation with the Jewish Museum , the Israelite community and the University of Basel is sought and further expanded.
