Johann Friedrich Ferdinand Delbrück (born April 12, 1772 in Magdeburg , † January 25, 1848 in Bonn ) was a philosopher and rhetorician .

Life

Delbrück was the third son of the Magdeburg lawyer and councilor Friedrich Heinrich Delbrück (1736–1783). He attended the cathedral school in Magdeburg , which was under the direction of Gottfried Benedict Funk . From Easter 1790 he studied philology and philosophy at the University of Halle . His teachers during his four-year studies included Friedrich August Wolf , Johann August Eberhard and Ludwig Heinrich von Jakob .

After that, on the recommendation of Funk, he became the educator of two sons of Count Stolberg in Eutin . He got into a religious and political conflict with the Count that could not be compensated, so that he switched to a merchant in Hamburg and took over the position of private tutor. Here he met Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock , the poet of the " Messiad ".

In 1795 he went back to his parents' house in Magdeburg and began to write his dissertation . On July 22, 1797 he received his doctorate at the University of Halle .

From Easter 1797 he was a member of the “teachers' seminar for learned schools” and in the autumn of that year he became “extraordinary collaborator” at the grammar school for the gray monastery . He taught propaedeutics , Latin and French, religion and exercises in the German language, since 1802 as a "professor". In Berlin he made friends with Philipp Buttmann , Johannes von Müller and Friedrich Schleiermacher .

In 1800 his brother Friedrich Delbrück was taken over by the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III. appointed tutor of Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm IV , which also made Ferdinand Delbrück the court's attention. The conflict between Prussia and France forced the Prussian court to move to Königsberg. In September 1809 Delbrück was appointed to the government council of the clerical and debt deputation of the East Prussian government in Königsberg .

In addition, on October 23, 1809, he was appointed associate professor in the philosophy faculty of the University of Königsberg . He gave lectures on aesthetic, philological and literary-historical issues. The activity in the school deputation encompassed the entire school system of the province and from 1811 the curator of the university, Landhofmeister Hans Jakob von Auerswald , elected him to the lecturing council for university affairs. During this time he gave lectures on the German language for the Crown Prince and Princess Charlotte . His public lectures focused on the aesthetics that inspired the poet Max von Schenkendorf to write a poem. In Königsberg he was related to Karl Dietrich Hüllmann , Johann Friedrich Herbart and Johann Georg Scheffner . In 1816 he became a school councilor in Düsseldorf .

On September 26, 1818 he was appointed full professor at the University of Bonn for rhetoric, beautiful literature and philology . In addition, he led (1819–1827) the commissariat of the Bonn grammar school and (1821–1824) the board of directors of the scientific examination commission. Delbrück wrote numerous writings during his time in Bonn. Goethe , whom he also got to know personally, valued his comments on poetry. One of his last works was a tribute to Hüllman.
