Johannes "Johnny" Ertl (born November 13, 1982 in Graz ) is a former Austrian football player in the position of defender and currently works as a board member of the English club Portsmouth FC .
societies
Storm Graz
Ertl began his career in the youth of SK Sturm Graz and played his way up to the amateur team. Since he saw no prospects there, he moved to SC Kalsdorf, but was brought back to Sturm after a year after good performances and was initially used again with the amateurs in the Regionalliga Mitte . Due to his achievements and above all his good duel behavior, he earned a place in the Graz fighting team and made his debut in the Bundesliga in 2003 .
Austria Vienna
On August 31, 2006, he moved from his regular club SK Sturm Graz to FK Austria Wien , where he signed a contract until summer 2008. Johannes Ertl scored his first Bundesliga goal on October 1, 2006 when the GAK played against Austria Wien in the UPC-Arena in Graz.
In 2007 he was the Austrian Cup winner with Austria Wien.
Crystal Palace
On July 3, 2008 he signed a two-year contract with the English second division fifth of the past season, Crystal Palace . In the 2009/10 season he secured the league with the Eagles only on the last day of the game, when the team gained the necessary points to keep the league from direct competitors Sheffield Wednesday , while the Owls were relegated third from bottom in Football League One .
Sheffield United
In June 2010, Ertl signed a two-year contract with Sheffield United after not receiving a contract extension with Crystal Palace. After immediately making the leap into the top team of the Blades , he suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in March 2011 and was out for the rest of the season. At the end of the season Ertl also had to experience relegation to Football League One with Sheffield United .
Portsmouth FC
After a year in Sheffield, Johnny Ertl decided to move to Portsmouth FC , which was still playing in the Football League Championship at the time, before the 2011/12 season. However, he was to experience another extremely turbulent time there. Because the club was in serious financial difficulties, ten points were deducted from him during the season. Portsmouth ended the season knocked out at the bottom of the table and relegated. After the season, almost the entire professional squad left the club, but Ertl decided to stay. Although Portsmouth immediately relegated again the next season due to the big problems in the club - this time from Football League One to fourth-rate Football League Two - Ertl became an absolute fan favorite due to his loyalty during this time.
In 2013, Portsmouth FC was taken over by the fans and from that point on was able to consolidate not only financially but also in terms of sport. Ertl played as captain of the team until the end of the 2014/2015 season in Football League Two .
National team
In May 2006, Ertl received his first call-up for the friendly international match against Croatia from team boss Hickersberger . He made his debut in the national team on August 16, 2006, when he was brought into play as a substitute for Paul Scharner in the 87th minute of Austria's 2-1 defeat by Hungary .
In total, Ertl played seven times in the senior national team. All missions were during the preparation time for the European Championship 2008 , which was held in Austria and Switzerland. Ertl was then not called up to the squad for the home EURO .
After the active career
Johannes Ertl already pursued a university education during his active football career. He holds a Master of Business Administration degree and completed training in corporate management in the football and private sectors in England. In the summer of 2015 he was elected to the club's board of directors by the Pompey Supporters' Trust , a fan association that runs Portsmouth FC . For the Austrian private broadcaster PULS 4 , he occasionally works as a TV expert for football matches broadcast there.
