Johannes or Johann Fahrngruber (born November 27, 1845 in Wiesrotte 1 (field name Bergschiede) near Frankenfels (Parish Plankenstein ); † August 13, 1901 in Dimaro , Province of Trient) was an Austrian pastor, local researcher and founder of the St. Pölten Diocesan Museum.

Life

Johannes Fahrngruber grew up as the son of the hammer smith Leopold Fahrngruber and Maria Anna Fahrngruber in Wiesrotte 1 (field name Bergschmiede). After he attended elementary school in Plankenstein , he graduated from high school in Krems an der Donau and then entered the episcopal seminary in St. Pölten. In 1871 he was ordained a priest from Bishop Joseph Feßler and then worked as a cooperator in Göstling an der Ybbs , from 1872 in Waidhofen an der Ybbs and St. Leonhard am Forst .

He went to Jerusalem in 1875 and was rector of the Austrian pilgrims' house. There he made numerous trips to research the history and culture of Palestine. After his return he was again a cooperator in Loosdorf in 1880 , in 1881 a temporary priest in Gerersdorf and in 1883 appointed to the episcopal secretary and ceremonial and in 1885 published his archival studies on the history of St. Pölten.

Fahrngruber was a founding member of the "Christian-Religious Art Association in Lower Austria" in 1887, and on behalf of the association and the bishop he set up a diocesan museum in the former monastery library.

His art historical interest was particularly in the bells, epitaphs and medieval stained glass. For his services to the preservation of monuments he was appointed curator by the kk Central Commission for the Preservation of Art and Historical Monuments.

Johannes Fahrngruber died unexpectedly of a stroke on a trip to South Tyrol in Dimaro in the province of Trento, where he was also buried.
