Johannes Holbek
Johannes Holbek (born November 13, 1872 in Årby near Kalundborg , † May 14, 1903 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish painter and draftsman .
He was the son of pastor Christian Ohnsorg Holbek (1833-1912) and Marie Frederikke Ludovica, née Thune (1837-1916), born. In 1891 he became a student at the Roskilde Cathedral School. In 1892 he attended vocational school, where the painter Holger Grønvold taught. In the spring of 1893 he completed a semester at the Royal Danish Academy of Art with Frederik Vermehren .
Johannes Holbek saw the works of Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin at the “Free Exhibition” at the artists' association , which made a deep impression on him. In the period from 1893 to 1894 he visited Paris and Brittany , and in 1899 Germany . His attempts to collaborate with the Danish press and the " Lustige Blätter " were unsuccessful.
He continued his studies in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts with Jean-Léon Gérôme and Gustave Moreau . From 1901 to 1902 he worked in Fernand Cormon's studio and illustrated “ Enoch Arden ” by Alfred Tennyson .
He died at the age of 31 and was buried in the Snoldelev cemetery. Many of his works were only published posthumously by his friend Jens Lund.
