John I merchant

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes I. Kaufmann (also Joannes Mercator ; * in Würzburg ; † March 5, 1489 in Ebrach ) was abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Ebrach from 1474 to 1489 . Before that, he held the chair of theology at the University of Vienna for 18 years .

Life

Johannes I. Kaufmann was born in Würzburg, Lower Franconia , in the second half of the 15th century . The sources are silent about the parents of the future abbot, and the siblings of the young Johannes are not mentioned either. The school education is also in the dark, Johannes probably attended the Latin school in the residence city of the Würzburg bishop. Then he probably went to a university and studied.

By 1466 Johannes Kaufmann took over in Vienna , the head of the theological faculty of the local university . He chaired this institution for a total of 18 years. At the same time he held the post of confessor of Emperor Maximilian . Only with his election as the twenty-seventh abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Ebrach did Johannes reappear in the Franconian area. In December 1474 his predecessor Burkard II died and the convent urgently needed a successor. Johannes Kaufmann was elected Abbot Johannes I.

The abbot's term of office is hardly mentioned in the sources. Only the fact that Johannes spent a lot of money on new buildings is recorded. During his tenure, the prelate collected a lot of money that he bequeathed to his home abbey after his death. On March 5th, 1489 Abbot Johannes I Kaufmann died and was buried in the monastery church in Ebrach.
