Karl Friedrich Johannes Lachmann (born August 1, 1832 in Braunschweig , † July 7, 1860 in Bonn ) was a German agricultural botanist .

Life

Lachmann was the son of the biologist Heinrich Lachmann , he studied natural sciences at the University of Göttingen and received his doctorate in 1855 at the Medical Faculty of the University of Berlin . From 1857 he was a lecturer in botany, zoology and mineralogy at the agricultural college in Poppelsdorf near Bonn .

Lachmann was a student of Johannes Müller and the first to recognize the nodules of legumes as bacteria-like, physiologically important organs. He suspected that these nodules cause the nitrogen enrichment of the soil observed after the cultivation of legumes. His publication under the title Ueber Knollen on the roots of the leguminous plants , which appeared in 1858 in the “house communications” of the Bonn agricultural educational institute, was ignored. Lachmann died in 1860. Only after Hermann Hellriegel had experimentally proven the biological nitrogen fixation by bacteria in 1886 , Lachmann's contribution from 1858 was rediscovered and reprinted again in 1891 in Biedermann's Central-Blatt für Agrikulturchemie .

Lachmann was accepted into the Masonic lodge " Carl zur crowned column " in Braunschweig in 1851 .
