Johannes Mangon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Mangon (* around 1525 probably in Liège ; † 1578 in Aachen ) was a Franco-Flemish composer , singer and conductor of the Renaissance .

Live and act

Johannes Mangon received his first musical training as a duodenus at the singing school ( schola cantorum ) of the municipality of Saint Martin-en-Mont in Liège, therefore it is assumed that he was born in this city. At this school he continued his studies after his voice broke ; possibly he was also a student of Jean de Latre there . At the church there he worked from 1562 to 1570 as a succentor . During this time he may already have the cathedral choir in Aachen for a whilebecause the copy of his mass "Ne ascondas me" in choir book I was made before October 31, 1567 with certainty. There is evidence of his activity as director of this choir from 1572 to 1577. In the invoice lists of the Aachen cathedral chapter his name is no longer listed from 1579, therefore it is assumed that the composer died in 1578 when a massive plague epidemic raged in Aachen, thousands of Have fallen victim to citizens. He was buried with them in one of the mass graves near today's Münsterplatz.

meaning

The traditional works by Johannes Mangon are contained in three choir books in Aachen Cathedral and consist exclusively of sacred vocal music. Most of the 19 masses are parody masses based on models by Jacobus Clemens non Papa , Pierre Sandrin , Thomas Crécquillon and Orlando di Lasso . The requiem , which is also included in the collections, shows a close stylistic proximity to German tradition. Of greater importance within his oeuvre are the 45 motets. The composer shows his particular interest in the melody and the intensity of the expression, but still pays attention to the stability of the form and the clarity of the counterpoint . The influence of Orlando di Lasso is unmistakable, but the model of the motets by Clemens non Papa also comes into its own. In addition to his own works, the choir books mentioned also contain those of other composers of his time, such as Clemens non Papa, Johannes de Cleve , Orlando di Lasso and Franciscus de Rivulo .

In the 19th century it was the later Aachen cathedral music director Heinrich Böckeler who took up the complete works of Johannes Mangon, which was based closely on the festival calendar of Aachen cathedral, and tried to reinterpret them (edition of the Missa in summis festis , published Aachen 1862). In 1959, the prelate and cathedral music director Rudolf Pohl wrote a musicological paper on Mangon's choral works, then edited, commented and edited new editions (published 1998–2000) as well as initiated performances and recordings.
