Johannes Morell

Johannes Morell (born March 11, 1759 in Egelshofen , Canton Thurgau , † April 22, 1835 in Frauenfeld ) was a Swiss politician .

life and work

Morell was the son of the coppersmith and businessman Johann Peter and Anna Margaretha, nee cousin. Morell completed an apprenticeship with land clerk Abraham Morell in Wangen an der Aare from 1776 to 1778 .

From 1778 to 1790 Morell was a trainee and until 1798 administrator of the Andelfingen State Chancellery . In 1798 he was appointed second secretary by the Thurgau regional committee and was senior secretary from 1798 to 1800 and its president from 1800 to 1803.

In 1803 Morell was a member of the Thurgau government commission and from 1803 to 1835 of the Small Council and from 1803 to 1831 of the Grand Council .

The former Unitarian developed into a federalist and defender of cantonal sovereignty rights in the government commission for foreign affairs and as a delegate to the parliament . From 1814 Morell was a member of the Constitutional Commission and served from 1815 to 1831 alternately with Joseph Anderwert as Landammann .

On Morell's initiative, the cantonal library was founded in 1805 and the Frauenfeld casino company in 1807 . Morell belonged to the St. Johannes Masonic Lodge in Zurich .

Morell received honorary citizenship of Frauenfeld in 1807 and married Maria Elisabeth, née Vogler († 1820), in the same year. His only son died in 1829.
