Life

Johannes Peter was the son of the professor of theology in Leiden Abraham Kuenen . After attending the municipal grammar school in his hometown , he enrolled at the University of Leiden on September 26, 1884 to study natural history. Here were Hendrik Lorentz and Kamerlingh Onnes his teacher. Kuenen received his doctorate on April 12, 1892 with the work Metingen concerning het oppervlak van Van der Waals voor mengsels van koolzuur en chloromethyl (German: Measurements of Van der Waals forces on the surface for mixtures of carbon dioxide and methyl chloride ). After working as an assistant to Kamerlingh Onnes from 1890, he became a conservator at the natural history laboratory of the Leiden University in 1893. In 1895 he received a professorship in physics at the University of Dundee and made a name for himself in researching the state of materials in the liquefaction and solidification of helium. In 1896 he was elected a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh .

On December 22, 1906 he was appointed professor of physics at the University of Leiden, which task he took on on February 25, 1907 with the introductory speech Het tegenwoordig standpunt en de beteekenis der molekulair theorie (German: The current point of view and the meaning of the molecular theory ) . In 1911 he became a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences , in 1915 a member of the Dutch Society of Sciences in Haarlem , a member of the Board of Trustees of the Metrological Institute in De Bilt and a member of the Reich Commission for Soil and Water Surveying. In 1922 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Padua , was elected rector of the Alma Mater on September 18 of the same year , but died unexpectedly during that term of office.
