Johannes August Röring (born May 16, 1959 in Vreden ) is a German politician ( CDU ) and agricultural worker . He has been a member of the Bundestag since 2005 .

Life and work

Röring left the Gymnasium Georgianum in Vreden in 1975 with the secondary school leaving certificate and completed an agricultural apprenticeship, which he finished in 1977 as an agricultural assistant. He then attended the Higher Agricultural School in Coesfeld and passed the state exam to become a farmer in 1980 . He then worked as a farmer in his parents' business in Vreden, which he finally took over in 1985. He runs it as an arable farm with pig fattening and biogas production .

In 2013 and 2019, around 900 pigs each died in the stables of the Röring family business due to power outages. In 2013, a technical defect was the cause; in 2019, strangers entered the stables and willfully put the ventilation system out of operation.

In 1994, Röring was elected chairman ( district farmer ) by the members of the Borken district association of the Westphalian-Lippian Agricultural Association (WLV) . Six years later he became chairman of the WLV district association in Münster. On May 23, 2012, he was elected President of the WLV with 61 out of 112 votes, making him the successor to Franz-Josef Möller .

In addition, Röring is still a deputy district farmer and a member of the board of directors of the Westphalian Landscape Foundation and board member of the specialist agency for renewable raw materials . At BSB GmbH - Landwirtschaftliche Buchstelle (Society for Bookkeeping and Assistance in Tax Matters for Agricultural and Forestry Operations Westfalen-Lippe mbH) he is a member of the supervisory board. Röring is a member of the Presidium of the German Farmers' Association . Röring is a member of the non-partisan European Union Germany , which advocates a federal Europe and the European unification process. Johannes Röring has been married since 1985 and has four children.

politics

Röring joined the CDU in 1986 and was a member of the CDU board in Vreden from 1987 to 1995. Since 2005 he has been a member of the German Bundestag and a full member of the Bundestag committees on food and agriculture as well as a deputy member of the committee for the environment, nature conservation and reactor safety .

Johannes Röring has entered the Bundestag as a directly elected member of the Borken II constituency . In the 2005 Bundestag election , he achieved 56.1% of the first votes .

The Tagesschau reported in September 2016 that there are pictures from the Rörings family business showing seriously injured animals in the stables. Obviously, one of the animals could not get up and crawled forward with difficulty. Film recordings were made by the animal rights group Animal Rights Watch (ARIWA) and Peta . According to Matthias Gauly, a renowned veterinary scientist from the University of Bolzano, the recordings showed “the worst form of pig farming imaginable with a high potential for animal suffering ” and “with catastrophic hygienic conditions”. Many stable pens are very dirty, ammonia measurements showed values that are more than twice as high as allowed. The photos also show carcasses , one was allegedly left lying for more than a day and eaten by other animals. Röring had his lawyer explain that the keeping conditions in the stable were "perfect" at the time the pictures were taken. In the pictures “nothing can be seen that could constitute a violation of the animal protection law”. The sick and injured animals were treated immediately. According to the letter, the carcass was "placed in the compartment shortly before it was admitted" to be photographed there. "Because the other pigs would immediately regard a carcass that is deposited there as food and start to eat it up." Corresponding bite wounds are not visible in the picture. The animal welfare activists from ARIWA deny having placed the carcass there.

On September 23, 2016, Röring invited to a press conference at his company in order to comment together with his son Christian and the farm veterinarian Jörg Tenhündfeld.

The Hamburg Regional Court decided on 11 October 2016 an injunction against the NDR that the transmitter unlawfully may not spread further on the operation made pictures and videos.

In 2017, Röring came under fire because he had participated in the front row with speeches in a demonstration in front of the Agriculture Ministers' Conference in Bad Sassendorf. He called for an exit from the ban on anesthetized piglet castration . Members of the SPD parliamentary group pointed out that the CDU had consistently hindered the establishment of alternative castration methods in the previous years, so that after the ban on anesthetized piglet castration there were hardly any options. Röring retained his political position.

In 2019, Röring clearly positioned itself against the planned tightening of the fertilizer ordinance .

Extra income

Röring has been among the Bundestag politicians with the highest additional income for years and is repeatedly criticized for this. According to a study by the Bremen Institute for Labor and Economics (IAW), interrelationships in agricultural policy are very common and Röring is one of the key positions here. In the ranking of the additional income of members of the German Bundestag (as of August 2, 2017), Röring is named in second place - behind Philipp Graf Lerchenfeld . By duty, all perquisites disclose the Internet portal has abgeordnetenwatch.de for John Röring in the 18th legislative term of the German Bundestag revenues of at least EUR 1,984,000 calculated which are composed of different positions. The official information (as of August 2, 2017) served as the basis for this. The portal cites him, based on numerous unknown sources, as a negative example of the concealment of additional income.

Röring's close personal ties to the agricultural lobby were a. in the ZDF satirical program Die Anstalt (from December 18, 2018) critically examined. The formulations used in it were subsequently criticized by the Chamber of Agriculture.

Criticism of Röring's conflicts of interest also comes from NABU .

In 2019, the Presidium of the German Bundestag found that Röring did not disclose additional income for activities at Landwirtschaftsverlag GmbH and Deutsche Genossenschafts-Hypothekenbank AG in Hamburg. According to reports in the Süddeutsche Zeitung (referring to the violation report by the Bundestag Presidium), Röring only met his reporting obligation after several deadlines had expired, despite a warning.
