Animal Rights Watch e. V. , founded in 2004 as “die Tierfreunde e. V. “, is a non-profit German animal rights organization . The aim of the association is the abolition of all forms of exploitation and oppression of animals. The recognition of animal rights is understood as the consistent implementation of the concept of animal protection and includes human rights as a specific form of animal rights.

Goal and approach

ARIWA advocates the social recognition of animal rights, which includes at least the basic rights to life , freedom and physical and mental integrity . The association problematizes a classic understanding of animal welfare that considers the protection and killing of animals to be compatible. According to the understanding of animal rights, as advocated by ARIWA, the use and killing of animals is generally rejected. ARIWA is committed to a vegan way of life and advocates organic, vegan agriculture . ARIWA is also committed to ending the use of animals in other areas such as the entertainment sector, the clothing industry or science ( animal testing ).

organization

The association was founded in 2004 in Siegen. The association's headquarters are now in Geseke. The association has 31 local groups in Germany (as of August 2019).

activities

With various activities, such as the preparation and publication of research recordings on the one hand and campaigns, demonstrations and local actions by the local groups as well as the organization of vegan street festivals, the association tries to bring the animal rights idea and the vegan idea into society.

research

The work of the association includes the preparation and publication of research recordings from plants in the animal industry, usually in connection with criminal charges against the managers. The image and video recordings are usually made without the consent of the operator and thus move in a legal gray area. A film team that had secretly made video recordings in a pig farm in Sandbeiendorf and whose pictures had been published by ARIWA, was acquitted in the final instance by the Naumburg Higher Regional Court. The court saw the making of the video recordings as a justifying emergency . The legal interest of animal welfare in the area with 65,000 animals had been injured in a way that the committed trespass justified the three assets. The ruling was classified as a key decision in the press. Agricultural associations criticized the judgment, the Westphalian-Lippian Agricultural Association, for example, saw the basic principles of the state in question.

Animal Rights Watch's research publications include the repeated uncovering of the killing of apparently unprofitable newborn animals in piglet breeding, the use of illegally narrow crate crates in numerous German pig farms, recordings from organic-certified farms that strongly contradict consumer expectations , and the documentation illegal conditions in the animal facilities of top officials German farmers' organizations such as the CDU - members of parliament John Röring .

Actions of the local groups

One of the ARIWA Infomobile in action.

The ARIWA local groups independently carry out a variety of activities. This includes information stands, vigils and creative protests. The ARIWA Infomobile show research videos in pedestrian zones. Public brunches invite you to get to know vegan food.

Demonstrations

The association regularly organizes various demonstrations in which the public is invited to participate.

Vegan demos

ARIWA conducts so-called "Vegan Demos", stationary events with vegan participants who present their personal reasons for the vegan lifestyle on posters. Since summer 2016, ARIWA has carried out more than 60 vegan demos. (As of January 2019).

For the closure of all slaughterhouses

ARIWA has been organizing demonstrations in Germany for the closure of all slaughterhouses since 2015 , which take place every year as part of a global series of demonstrations around a key date in June.

Awareness campaigns

Say no to milk

The animal rights campaign “Say No to Milk”, co-initiated by ARIWA, aims to dispel milk myths, show the background to milk production and point out alternatives . The campaign regularly calls for action weeks against World Milk Day and World School Milk Day (Schulmilchprogramm_der_European_Union).

A new look at fish

As one of more than 100 organizations worldwide, ARIWA is involved in the "A new look at fish" campaign, which aims to raise awareness of fish as an especially high number of consumed animals with various information and protest events and to provide information about their often underestimated abilities. The focus of the campaign is the World End of Fisheries Day, which has been proclaimed at the end of March every year since 2017.

Projects to promote the vegan lifestyle

ARIWA sees the vegan way of life as a practical implementation of the animal rights idea and promotes it with various projects outside of demonstrations and local group activities.

Vegan celebrations

ARIWA has been organizing Vegan Street Day, by its own account Germany's most famous vegan street festival, since 2006 in Dortmund . In 2010 the Vegan Street Day Stuttgart was added. Vegan Street Days offer a mix of entertainment, information and food that regularly attracts 10,000 people. Other vegan festivals organized by ARIWA are the vegan street festival Hamburg or the Vegan im Quadrat Mannheim .

Vegan Buddy

With the Vegan Buddy Program, ARIWA offers an online platform on which people who are interested in a vegan lifestyle have the opportunity to get to know people in their region who are already vegan. These “Vegan Buddies” offer individual support when switching to a vegan lifestyle.

Name change

Since January 1, 2013, the association has been called Animal Rights Watch eV The old name "die Tierfreunde eV" was discarded due to confusion and misunderstandings, as similar names are often used in the "classic animal welfare sector ". The new name is intended to highlight the association's commitment to the rights of all animals.
