from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Ferdinand Schneider (born September 23, 1895 in Stadtoldendorf ; † May 22, 1970 in Berlin ) was a Baptist theologian. He is considered to be the first Baptist to have taught Protestant theology at a German university .

Life

Johannes Schneider was the eldest son of the Baptist preacher Ferdinand Johann Schneider (1862-1940) and his wife Anna Maria, née Funke (1872-1945). The father's job brought a series of changes of residence for the family of eight: Stadtoldendorf, Luckenwalde , Neuruppin , Landsberg an der Warthe , where he passed his school leaving examination at Easter 1914, and finally Treuenbrietzen , his parents' retirement home. When the First World War broke out, Schneider volunteered for the medical service . In October 1914 he was drafted, but released almost a year later due to a heart disease. In 1915 he enrolled at the Philosophical Faculty of the Berlin Friedrich Wilhelms University , but already in the winter semester 1915/16 he attended theological lectures with the New Testament scholar Adolf Deißmann (1866-1937). This was followed by three semesters at the University of Halle . He then returned to Berlin and studied philosophy and history as well as law and theology. In September 1919 he moved to the University of Göttingen , where he continued his history studies and at the same time also attended lectures in political science . In the latter area in 1923 was carried out his doctorate to Dr. rer. pole. The title of his dissertation was: The Sociopolitical Views of Friedrich Naumann .

In 1923 Schneider moved back to the University of Berlin, this time to the theological faculty. In 1926 he wrote - at the suggestion of Adolf Deißmann - a thesis on the subject of The Passion Mysticism of Paul , with which he received his doctorate in 1927 as a licentiate in theology (later converted to Dr. theol. ). From 1926 to 1927 worked for the Kassel Oncken-Verlag as editor of the Baptist Sunday newspaper Der Truthszeuger . At the same time he took care of a new edition of the messenger of help , a handout for free church clergy whose appearance had been stopped during the world war. Schneider remained connected to both magazines throughout his life and provided them with numerous articles that were easy to understand.

After his habilitation in 1930, he became a private lecturer at the University of Berlin. In 1935 he became associate professor of the New Testament at the University of Berlin. From 1937 to 1939 he taught as a full professor in Breslau . 1939/1940 he was visiting professor in the USA. In 1941 he became an associate professor of theology in Berlin. In 1950 he became a full professor for the New Testament at Humboldt University . In 1945/1946 he was (provisional) and from 1954 to 1956 dean of the theological faculty.
