Johannes Steuber

Johannes Steuber (born January 16, 1590 in Schwickartshausen ; † February 5, 1643 in Marburg ) was a German Hebrew and Evangelical Lutheran theologian .

Life

Johannes Steuber was born in Schwickartshausen in 1590 as the son of pastor Johannes Steuber.

He attended pedagogies in Marburg and Gießen and studied at the University of Gießen from 1606 ; later at the University of Heidelberg . In 1614 he became professor of physics and the Greek language in Giessen , 1620 professor of theology and the Hebrew language . He was also university librarian from 1615 to 1625. In 1623 he was promoted to Dr. theol. PhD. When in 1627 the so-called main accord between Upper Hesse and Marburg fell back to Hessen-Darmstadt and the previously reformed University of Marburg was transformed into a Lutheran state university, Steuber moved there and initially worked as a professor of Hebrew, from 1627 of theology. He was also the university librarian here (until 1635) and pastor at the Elisabeth Church . In 1635 he became Ephorus of the Hessian Scholarship Institute .

Steuber served as dean of the theological faculty at the University of Marburg in 1628, 1629, 1631 and 1634 . In 1633 he was rector of the university.

In 1643 he died of a stroke .

Steuber was born in 1616 with Elisabeth. Lüncker († April 4, 1664) married and had at least six children, of whom the son Johann Engelhard Steuber (1618–1683) was also pastor and superintendent in Marburg. His great-grandson, Johann Engelhard Steuber (1698–1747) and his son Christian Georg Steuber (1731–1789) were also active as important Hebraists.
