Johannes Peter Wessels (born April 1, 1962 in Bremen ) is a German physicist . He is the rector of the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . His scientific work focuses on heavy ion physics , detector development and medical imaging .

Life

Johannes Wessels studied physics at the University of Heidelberg from 1981 to 1986 . In 1990 the doctorate to Dr. rer. nat. at the University of Heidelberg and the Society for Heavy Ion Research , Darmstadt, where he was a postdoctoral researcher from 1991 to 1993.

From 1993 to 1996 Johannes Wessels was an Assistant Professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook . He then worked again as a university assistant ( C1 ) at Heidelberg University until 2001 . During this time he worked on the CERES / NA45 experiment at CERN .

In 2003 he was appointed full professor at the physics department of the Westphalian Wilhelms-Universität Münster, from 2006 to 2010 he was dean of the department.

From 2010 to 2016 he was spokesman for the Hadrons and Cores Association of the German Physical Society . From 2011 to 2016 he was deputy spokesman for the ALICE experiment at CERN.

Johannes Wessels has been Rector of the Westphalian Wilhelms University since October 1, 2016. He succeeded Ursula Nelles in this office . In 2018, Wessels was elected Rector of the Year by the German University Association. He has been a member of the Scientific Policy Committee at CERN since 2019.

Act

Johannes P. Wessels is involved in various leading experiments in heavy ion physics such as ALICE at CERN in Geneva and PHENIX at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island . Further research activities concern the development of new detectors, for example for the future CBM experiment at the International Accelerator Center FAIR at the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research or for medical applications ( positron emission tomography ).
