Johannes Wilhelmus Timpe (baptized April 17, 1770 in Glane near Bad Iburg , † June 7, 1837 in Groningen ) was a German - Dutch organ builder .

life and work

Johannes Wilhelmus Timpe came from the Osnabrück region , where he was baptized in the Catholic Church in Glane. His father Bernhard Heinrich Timpe († 1782) was a farmer. Johannes Wilhelmus Timpe married the maid Petronella le Jeune on January 3, 1803 (* 1773; † April 27, 1863). Three children were born to the two of them, the two daughters Anna Maria (* August 9, 1822 - July 24, 1826) and Emmerantia Anna Catharina (* April 29, 1824) as well as the son Bernardus Nicolaas (* August 26, 1815; † 4 November 1840). In 1830 he was still out of work, but in 1834 he was referred to as an organ builder. Because of his health problems and his short stature (152.5 cm), he was released from military service for a year and then for another year. He increasingly took over activities in his father's company, so that it was renamed "JWTimpe & Zoon". This is also due to the fact that JW Timpe's health deteriorated more and more in the last years of his life. His wife died in the Catholic poor house in Groningen.

Johannes Wilhelmus Timpe initially worked in organ building in the workshop of Nicolaus Anthony Lohmann (1766–1835) in Groningen. From 1806 to 1812 he was a master craftsman with Heinrich Hermann Freytag and after his death he completed the organs in Oostwold (1811) and Warffum (1812). Then he went into business for himself. A total of 17 works by Timpe, who worked in the tradition of classical Groningen organ building, are proven.

Petrus van Oeckelen , who had specialized in organ building at Timpe, took over the workshop after Timpe's death. Another journeyman Timpe was Wilhelm Caspar Joseph Höffgen .
