Johannes Martin Fasting Wilhjelm (born January 7, 1868 in Nakskov , † December 22, 1938 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish painter.

He was strongly influenced by the naturalist Kristian Zahrtmann , which is reflected in his bright and colorful landscape paintings of Italy. His work also includes religious art and portraiture . He belonged to the artist colony of the Skagen painters .

education

After studying at Harald Foss' technical school in Copenhagen, he joined the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1888 . Under Peder Severin Krøyer he then studied art from 1892 to 1894 at the Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler and in 1903 he spent a year under Kristian Zahrtmann.

Career

In 1893 Wilhjelm traveled to Italy with Zahrtmann. A strong friendship developed between the two, which was strengthened by the fact that Wilhjelms brother Zahrtmanns sister married in the same year. Wilhjelms art was strongly influenced by Zahrtmann, especially in the formative year 1903 in Copenhagen. His earlier Frisian style in pictures such as Bøn om Regn or Vinhøst I Abruzzerne was vehemently rejected by Zahrtmann. Bright and colorful works from Civita d'Antino such as Motif fra en Procession i Appenninerne , on the other hand, mark Zahrtmann's great influence. Later he painted landscapes of the moors of Jutland ( Idyl paa Heden (1908)), religious figures and altar art ( Daphnis og Cloë (1906)) or portraits. From 1910 he painted in the artists' colony in Skagen , and after 1916 he even owned a house in Skagen Østerby. His paintings depicted dunes from the silted up church or the beach at Sønderstrand , often together with his daughters. The works are exhibited in Skagens Museum , including the painting Painterinder på Skagen (1912) and a portrait of Michael Ancher in Brøndums Hotel .

Every year from 1893 to 1939 he exhibited his pictures in both the Kunsthal Charlottenborg and the counter-exhibition Den Frie Udstilling . There were also various exhibitions in Italy, France, Norway, Germany and Great Britain. From 1905 to 1914 he was an organizational member of the Charlottenborg exhibition and from 1914 to 1922 he had a seat at the academy.

Prices

Wilhjelm was awarded the Eckersberg Medal , an honor for Danish artists, donated by the Royal Danish Academy of Art and named after Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg , in 1910 and 1911.

Private

Johannes Wilhjelm was, through his mother, a great-nephew of the Inspector for North Greenland Ludvig Fasting .
