from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes de Indagine (actually Johannes von Hagen ; † August 11, 1469 ) was a Benedictine monk and important abbot of the Bursfelde monastery . He was the actual founder of the Bursfeld Congregation .

Life

Bursfelde Monastery ( Bürsfeld ) after Matthäus Merian , around 1654–1658.

Johannes de Indagine was initially a canon at the Magdalenenstift in Hildesheim . In 1439, after the death of Johannes Dederoth , who had reformed the Bursfelde monastery after a phase of decline, he was his successor as abbot of the monastery.

During Indagine's tenure, a number of other monasteries adopted the Bursfeld way of life. The reformed communities formed a network, the Bursfeld Congregation, which continued to grow even after Hagen's death. In May 1446 the first general chapter of the new congregation took place in Bursfelde under Hagen's leadership , the annual meeting of the abbots of all participating convents. This general chapter was the supreme body of the congregation with very extensive decision-making powers.
