The Johannesburg Stadium ( English Johannesburg Stadium ; Afrikaans Johannesburg Stadium ) is a rugby - and football stadium with athletics track in the district Doornfontein of the largest South African city of Johannesburg , Province of Gauteng .

history

The 37,000 facility, which opened in 1992   , including a warm-up area, parking spaces and footpaths, was originally designed as an athletics stadium, but it is also used for football and rugby. It is located east of the city center, around 500 meters north of the Ellis Park Stadium , today Emirates Airline Park . There are currently 36,000 seats available and the main stand is spanned by a roof. The other area also includes the multi-purpose hall Ellis Park Arena with 6,300 seats, an outdoor pool and a tennis facility . In September 1998 the Johannesburg Stadium hosted the 8th World Athletics Cup . A year later, the athletics competitions and the soccer final of the 1999 African Games were held in the stadium. In 2002, Ellis Park Stadium ( PtyLtd. Operator of the stadium. At that time it offered 37,500 seats at sporting events and held up to 65,000 spectators at concerts. The stadium has 39 suites, two event suites and a presidential suite. All suites have a glass front with outdoor seating and offer owners a view of the playing field and running track.

The football club Orlando Pirates bears his games at Orlando Stadium (40,000 seats) and the rugby union team the Golden Lions is based in the Emirates Airline large park with 60,000 seats. The two clubs use the Johannesburg Stadium as a training ground.
