John Adams Whipple (born September 10, 1822 in Grafton , Massachusetts , United States , † April 10, 1891 in Cambridge ) was an American inventor and pioneer of photography .

Life

The parents of John Adams Whipple (father Jonathan Whipple (* July 7, 1795 - November 10, 1851) and mother Melinda Grout (* 1799 - June 1863)) paid a lot of attention to the upbringing of their son. Whipple had already studied chemistry intensively as a boy . When the chemical process of the daguerreotype became known in the United States in 1839 , it was the first to produce the necessary photographic chemicals .

Since his health suffered from working with chemicals, he turned more to photography. He made his first daguerreotype with a self-made camera , using the glass of sunglasses as a lens and a box for candles as a housing. The handle of a silver spoon served as a "photographic plate". Together with James Wallace Black , he founded the Whipple and Black photo studio in Boston and over time has become a well-known portrait photographer . He also photographed well-known buildings in and around Boston.

The wedding with his wife Elizabeth Mann (born November 1, 1819, † 1891) took place on May 12, 1847 in Boston .

Act

Whipple became a pioneer in the field of astrophotography . Together with the astronomer William Cranch Bond , he made the first images of a star , Vega , at the Harvard College Observatory in 1850 . Whipple and Bond were honored for their detailed recordings of the moon at the world exhibition in London's Crystal Palace in 1851 .

Beginning in 1863, Whipple used electric lights to take nighttime photographs of Boston. He made several inventions in the field of photography, including a. Crystallotypes (daguerreotypes on glass ) from which paper prints could be made.

Exhibitions

Whipple's photographs are now exhibited in several museums, including B. in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York .
