John Alexander Ahl (1859)

John Alexander Ahl (born August 16, 1813 in Strasburg , Franklin County , Pennsylvania , †  April 25, 1882 in Newville , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1857 and 1859 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1825 John Ahl came to Newville with his parents. He attended the public schools in his respective homeland and then taught himself for some time. After a subsequent medical degree at the University of Maryland in Baltimore and his 1852 admission as a doctor, he began to practice in Centerville in this profession until 1856 . He then worked in Newville in real estate and paper manufacturing. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . In June 1856 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Cincinnati , where James Buchanan was nominated as a presidential candidate.

In the congressional election of 1856 , Ahl was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 16th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Republican Lemuel Todd on March 4, 1857 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1858, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1859 . This was shaped by the events leading up to the civil war .

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, John Ahl worked again in papermaking. He also operating in Antietam ( Maryland molten iron). Ahl also worked as a doctor for the state militia and was involved in building the Harrisburg & Potomac Railroad . He died on April 25, 1882 in Newville, where he was also buried.
