Strasburg is a borough with 2852 inhabitants (2013) in Lancaster County in the US state of Pennsylvania .

geography

Strasburg is 12 kilometers southeast of Lancaster and around 100 kilometers west of the city of Philadelphia . The US Highway 30 runs at a distance of two kilometers to the north of Strasburg.

history

The place of today's Strasburg was already used in 1693 by French hunters as a trading place for fur with the Delaware Indians . Soon followed by other settlers, mainly Huguenots , the center of the village of the 1700s in the style of her hometown of Strasbourg in Alsace then Strasburg called. This was followed by the economic heyday of the place, which, however , went hand in hand with the emergence of entertainment districts and crime , which is why the place was sometimes referred to as Hell's Hole ( Hell's Hole ). The Borough of Strasburg was officially founded in 1816.

Today Strasburg is particularly attractive to visitors because of its museums, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania and the National Toy Train Museum . On the 1700 sqft (approx. 160 m²) Choo Choo Barn site, 22 model railways are operated in a handcrafted landscape.

There are many historically valuable buildings and places in the village, some of which, as well as some antique locomotives , are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .
